Course Description
Video essays are an increasingly popular and accessible form of media criticism, explored and analyzed in podcasts (The Video Essay Podcast) and academic workshops (Scholarship in Sound & Image), and produced by practitioners ranging from professional film editors to scholars to students to fans. In this course, we’ll explore a range of ways to understand and create video essays, from the expository to the poetic and points between. Students will learn the fundamentals of video editing and video essay production, culminating in a final video essay project.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will

  • have a working knowledge of how to use video editing software
  • think critically about the components and structure of video essays
  • be able to communicate your ideas about film and media audiovisually
  • understand the role and limitations of US copyright law in creating video essays
